The Birthplace of the Australian Light Horse

In 1896, Murrumburrah became the proud site of the first mustering of the 1st Australian Horse under Colonel Mackay. This historic gathering laid the foundation for what would become the renowned Australian Light Horse following the Federation.

Heroic Legacy in World War I

During World War I, the Australian Light Horse distinguished themselves with extraordinary bravery. In 1915, they fought as infantry during the Gallipoli campaign. Their valour continued through the Middle Eastern Campaign, particularly during the Battle of Beersheba in 1917. This battle is celebrated as ‘the last great mounted charge in history,’ leading to the liberation of Jerusalem after 400 years of Ottoman rule.

CommemoratingBill the Bastard

Named in honour of the birthplace of the First Australian Light Horse at Murrumburrah, The Light Horse Hotel is steeped in history.

Whilst visiting the Light Horse Hotel further immerse yourself in this proud legacy with a short stroll to the iconic life-sized sculpture of Bill the Bastard, Australia’s greatest war-horse proudly crafted by local sculptor Carl Valerius.

Bill the Bastard - Australia's Greatest Warhorse

The legacy of the Australian Light Horse is immortalized in the story of ‘Bill the Bastard,’ Australia’s greatest war horse, as recounted in Roland Perry’s 2012 publication.

Local sculptor Carl Valerius honoured this tale by creating a life-sized model of Bill, depicting his heroic act of carrying his mount Shanahan and four troopers to safety during the Battle of Romani in 1916, a pivotal moment that saved the Suez Canal from Turkish forces.

The Bronzing of Bill the Bastard

A dedicated local committee embarked on a mission to fund the bronzing of Bill the Bastard. Today, the bronzed statue stands proudly opposite the Murrumburrah 1st Australian Light Horse & Australian Light Horse Memorial, near The Light Horse Hotel, celebrating our region’s illustrious past.

This iconic establishment, initially known as ‘The Commercial,’ has served the community for over a century before being renamed ‘The Light Horse Hotel’ in honour of the Australian Light Horse’s historical significance.

Preservation of The Light Horse Hotel

In 2018, The Light Horse Hotel faced an uncertain future when it was put up for sale and risked being acquired by a ‘land banker.’ The community, particularly those involved with the Memorial and the bronzing of Bill, feared losing this historic landmark. Thanks to the efforts of Rhys Gray, chairman of the committee, the hotel was secured and saved from being taken out of circulation.

Revival and Reopening

After undergoing renovations, The Light Horse Hotel reopened in April 2023 under the stewardship of Rhys Gray as the publican. Today, it stands as a beautifully restored testament to Harden-Murrumburrah’s history, offering a unique and enriching experience for visitors.

Discover Historyin Silo Art

Just a couple of blocks from the Light Horse Hotel, you’ll find a remarkable piece of art by the acclaimed Mongolian street artist Heesco.

This must-see mural on the former Murrumburrah flour mill is the 46th addition to the silo trail. It vividly captures the mill’s storied history and the golden grain that brought prosperity to the region. The original flour mill, built in 1865, was rebuilt between 1919 and 1922 after a major fire, including the construction of the iconic concrete twin silos.

Located just across the street from the Harden Murrumburrah Visitor Information Centre, and near George Coddington and Roberts Park, this artwork is a testament to the area’s rich heritage.
